How to Care for Knotless Box Braids

How to Care for Knotless Box Braids

Why Knotless Box Braids Need Special Care

Knotless box braids are one of the most popular protective styles right now — and for good reason. Unlike traditional box braids, the knotless technique starts with your natural hair and gradually adds extensions, resulting in a flatter, more natural-looking root with significantly less tension on your scalp. But to keep them looking salon-fresh and protect your natural hair underneath, the right aftercare routine is everything.

At Glam Hair AU, our Brisbane-based stylists specialise in knotless braids that are designed to last — and with the right care, yours can too.

How to Wash Your Knotless Box Braids

Yes, you can (and should!) wash your braids. Aim to cleanse your scalp every 2–3 weeks to remove product buildup, sweat, and oil.

  • Use a diluted shampoo or braid spray — apply directly to your scalp in sections, not the length of the braids.
  • Rinse thoroughly — leftover shampoo causes itching and flaking.
  • Squeeze, don't rub — gently squeeze water out of the braids to avoid frizz and unravelling.
  • Air dry completely — sitting under a hooded dryer or allowing full air dry prevents mildew and odour.

Moisturising Your Scalp

Your scalp still needs hydration even when it's braided. Use a lightweight oil (like jojoba, tea tree, or peppermint oil) applied directly to the scalp with a nozzle applicator bottle every 3–5 days. Avoid heavy butters or creams on the braids themselves — they attract lint and cause buildup.

Protecting Your Braids at Night

This step is non-negotiable. Before bed, always:

  • Wrap your braids in a satin or silk scarf, or sleep on a satin pillowcase.
  • Loosely gather your braids into a pineapple or loose bun to reduce friction.
  • Avoid tight styles overnight — they stress the roots and cause breakage.

Managing Frizz

Some frizz is natural, especially after a few weeks. To tame it:

  • Apply a small amount of edge control or braid mousse to flyaways.
  • Use a soft toothbrush or edge brush to smooth the hairline.
  • Avoid excessive manipulation — the more you touch your braids, the faster they frizz.

How Long Should You Keep Them In?

Knotless box braids are best worn for 6–8 weeks. Leaving them in longer risks matting, excessive buildup, and damage to your natural hair as it grows out. If your braids are still looking good at 8 weeks, it's still time to take them down and give your scalp a break before reinstalling.
