Braid Maintenance Tips: Keep Your Braids Fresh for Longer

Braid Maintenance Tips: Keep Your Braids Fresh for Longer

Your Braids Are an Investment — Protect Them

A fresh set of braids from Glam Hair AU is a serious investment of time and money. The good news? With the right maintenance routine, you can keep them looking salon-fresh for weeks. Whether you're rocking knotless box braids, Fulani braids, or a boho style, these tips apply across the board.

1. Protect Your Braids Every Night

This is the single most impactful thing you can do. Friction from cotton pillowcases causes frizz, flyaways, and premature unravelling. Every night before bed:

  • Wrap your braids in a satin or silk scarf or bonnet
  • Alternatively, switch to a satin pillowcase
  • Loosely gather your braids into a pineapple or low bun to reduce tension on the roots

2. Keep Your Scalp Clean

Dirty scalp = itchy scalp = you touching your braids constantly = faster frizz. Aim to cleanse your scalp every 2–3 weeks using a diluted shampoo or a dedicated braid spray. Focus on the scalp, not the length of the braids, and rinse thoroughly. Always allow your braids to fully air dry before styling or wrapping them up.

3. Moisturise Your Scalp Regularly

Your scalp still produces oil when it's braided, but it can't distribute naturally. Use a lightweight oil (jojoba, tea tree, or peppermint work well) applied directly to the scalp with a nozzle bottle every 3–5 days. Avoid heavy products on the braids themselves — they attract lint and cause buildup.

4. Tame Frizz the Right Way

Some frizz is inevitable as your braids age, but you can manage it:

  • Apply a small amount of braid mousse or edge control to flyaways
  • Use a soft bristle brush or toothbrush to smooth the hairline
  • For boho or curly styles, refresh the curls with a light curl cream and scrunch gently
  • Avoid excessive touching — the oils from your hands transfer to the braids and accelerate frizz

5. Be Gentle with Your Edges

Your edges are the most delicate part of your hairline and the first to show stress. Avoid:

  • Tight ponytails or updos that pull on the hairline
  • Sleeping without a scarf (friction damages edges overnight)
  • Heavy products that clog follicles along the hairline

If you notice thinning or soreness at the edges, take your braids down sooner rather than later and give your scalp a rest.

6. Don't Leave Them In Too Long

As tempting as it is to stretch your style, braids should come out by 8 weeks maximum. Beyond that, new growth causes matting at the root, which can lead to breakage when you try to detangle. Your natural hair needs regular breaks between protective styles to stay healthy.

7. Book a Maintenance Appointment

If your braids are looking a little tired but you're not ready to take them down, a maintenance appointment can help. We can re-do the edges, tighten any loose braids, and refresh the overall look so you get a few more weeks out of your style.
